What is Trichology?

Trichologists study the structure and function of the hair and scalp, making them the ultimate hair experts!

Mark Constantine, Lush co-founder and product inventor is a trained trichologist and brings his expertise to each hair product he creates. Here are a few trichological tips for tantalizing tresses...

Scalp stimulation

Healthy hair starts with the scalp, so look for products with stimulating ingredients such as cinnamon leaf, peppermint, nettle and rosemary to leave your scalp feeling refreshed and tingly.

Massage

Whenever you’re shampooing or conditioning, massage the product into your scalp using strong fingertip pressure. Not only does a scalp massage feel incredible, it helps to ensure all the beneficial ingredients reach your scalp and can get to work soothing, stimulating or hydrating.

Jojoba oil

Sebum is the natural oil your body produces to help prevent your skin and hair from drying out. Mostly controlled by your hormones, it protects your hairs’ cuticles from damage, coating them and making them shiny. The closest oil to our natural sebum is jojoba oil. It helps to keep hair healthy-looking while also dissolving and clearing excess oils from the scalp. Because it’s so effective at moisturizing and protecting the hair, you’ll find it in many of our shampoosconditioners and hair treatments.

Understanding your hair shape

Hair comes in various textures which will influence how the hair is naturally moisturized by sebum. Straight hair has a round hair shaft, which allows the sebum to easily travel to the ends of the hair - but this can also mean it’s prone to feeling too oily. Curly hair has an oval shaft that causes the hair to grow in a spiral formation, making it more difficult for the sebum to make its way evenly down the hair shaft. This means the curly hair may need some extra moisturizing, especially at the ends which can often feel dry.

Treat your hair to a treatment

Hair treatments aren’t just for those in need of emergency repairs; use them on a regular basis to maintain gorgeous locks. Pre-wash, deep conditioning hair masks are packed with plant oils, clays, butters, and essential oils to infuse moisture, volume, or simply to brighten up your hair.
