Firstly, you want to keep on following the local advice in your area on wearing face masks to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
We've got five top tips on preventing maskne -
1. If you’re using reusable masks, check out the materials and fit. Are they made of soft and breathable material to avoid heat and moisture build-up, and do you have a snug but comfy fit to avoid extra friction and adjusting?
2. Is your face feeling cleansed and moisturised before you pop your mask on? This will help prevent dryness that can lead to irritation and oil overproduction.
3. If you are wanting to wear makeup, just do the top half of your face or go very light-on from cheeks to chin. Even if you are just wearing half a face of makeup; try to ensure its removal as soon as you’re back home, and then cleanse and moisturise.
4. Make sure you’re washing your mask regularly and as directed.
5. The best practice for preventing the spread of disease, as well as looking after your skin is washing the mask (and your face!) after each use.
Sometimes maskne is just going to happen. For when it does, we've created a skincare routine that is great for active breakouts, rebalancing, and maintaining clear skin.
Step 1: First Cleanse with Ultrabland Cleanser
Doubling as an effective makeup remover, Ultrabland Cleansing Balm has an almond oil base, which is rich in vitamins A and E, soothing and astringent rosewater, and naturally antibacterial and anti-inflammatory honey. Most effective when applied to a dry face and then removed with warm water and a cloth.
“Love this stuff. Fantastic product little goes a long way doesn't dry my skin out at all this is a total must for anyone working wearing masks for 13 hours a day has been a little god send for me.”

Step 2: Second Cleanse with Aqua Marina Fresh Cleanser
Aqua Marina Fresh Cleanser is a nourishing and mineral-rich seaweed cleanser containing kaolin and calamine to absorb excess oils for a clear complexion. We’ve added aloe vera to help cool and protect your skin, and super fine sea salt for its antimicrobial and astringent properties. Great for even the most sensitive skin and gentle enough to use on active breakouts.
To use our Fresh Cleansers, take a pinch of cleanser and a little water in your palm and work together into a paste. When you're happy with the texture, massage over your face before gently washing away with warm water.
”This works amazingly on my combination skin and removes excess oil and dirt from pores, without drying my skin out or clogging my pores. I love this product. It’s the best cleanser I’ve ever used and was a lot more creamy and soft than I expected! It’s become a firm favourite of mine and I use it every morning before putting on my ‘Enzymion’ moisturiser!”

Step 3: Mask with Cosmetic Warrior
With all your daily face mask wearing, we’d recommend a different kind of face mask (the ones we’re known for!) 2-3 times a week.
Every single ingredient in Cosmetic Warrior is a true hero in the quest for clear skin. We have a kaolin clay base to help to absorb excess oils and mattify skin, as antibacterial fresh green grapes contain alpha-hydroxy acid (also known as AHA) to provide a gentle exfoliation. Local favourite, tea tree oil is antibacterial, antifungal and antimicrobial to help keep bacteria at bay, and we threw in fresh garlic as well for its powerful antibacterial properties, helping to reduce spots and clear your complexion.
With all that effective cleansing, to ensure balance we have humectant honey to attract and retain moisture in the skin, and creamy silken tofu and soya yoghurt to condition and soften.
“Helped calm and clear my spots. I’ve read some mixed reviews regarding the smell but honestly it doesn’t bother me. Tea tree overpowers the garlic so it’s quite pleasant. Leaves skin fresh, well cleansed and works well to calm spots. I even think it made some of my bigger spots a lot less angry in one application.”

Step 4: Tone with Tea Tree Toner Water
We reckon tea tree water is such a hero in this toner, that we just simply named the product after it! Tea tree is antibacterial, antifungal and antimicrobial, helping keep away the bacteria that can cause spots. We’ve also added in grapefruit water to help clear and clean congested skin, and antiseptic and skin-balancing juniper berry water. Because our toner waters are alcohol-free, a spritz or two when you’re on the go will give a quick cleanse and leave your skin feeling refreshed.
“I have used this product for years and wow. it works wonders. I have acne-prone skin and this has helped to soothe my skin to leave it feeling cool and help get rid of my blemishes. I spray it on after cleansing or use a cotton round to wipe my face if I don't have time to wash my face between training sessions. ps, I have oily and sometimes sensitive skin and this has never irritated my skin in any way.”

Step 5: Moisturise with Vanishing Cream
Vanishing Cream is a light moisturiser that does what it says on the pot - it vanishes right into your skin! You’ll be left with beautifully soft, lightly fragranced skin without the residue that can make you feel like your skin has been overloaded. Each ingredient in this moisturiser is chosen for its part in keeping skin soft without increasing oiliness. You’ll find ingredients such as rose water and lavender honey water to soothe and balance, witch hazel to help maintain clear skin, and easily absorbed organic jojoba oil for the hydration hit.
Go light on with the application, as you’ll find you only need to swipe one or two fingertips worth over your face and neck.
“Love it! Can’t use anything else. I have combination skin and it is very sensitive. This moisturiser leaves my skin feeling soft not oily. It relieves and soothes my skin breakouts. Highly recommended.”

Step 6: Treatment with Grease Lightning Spot Treatment
Dab a drop of our Grease Lightning Spot Treatment on breakouts for a gentle cleanse to help reduce the visibility and size of spots, minimise inflammation, and leave your skin looking clear and bright.
A thyme, rosemary and tea tree infusion provides antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties to help reduce the visibility and size of spots. While aloe vera gel calms, helps to protect the skin, and reduces redness. We’ve also added in some grape juice as a natural AHA. AHAs help to exfoliate the skin’s top layer, leaving it looking smooth and bright.
Because it’s an alcohol-free formula and doesn’t leave your skin feeling tight, Grease Lightning is gentle enough to use daily or whenever you feel a spot creeping up.
“I've been using this whenever my skin acts up for five years now, it's truly remarkable! One bottle goes such a long way and you only need to apply a tiny bit for it to work. It doesn't dry my skin out like other acne treatments and doesn't leave any residue. Would definitely recommend!”

The Importance of Sun Protection
While Lush doesn’t currently manufacture SPF-rated products, we strongly encourage adding a facial sunscreen to your routine if you’re out and about. Using sunscreen throughout the year (yes, even on those overcast days!) not only helps protect this sensitive area of your skin from harmful UV rays which can lead to skin cancer, but it also aids in minimising visible sun damage. In Australia and New Zealand, it is recommended you use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF30.
We’re all a bit different, and that’s okay!
While the above routine has been developed with general maskne needs in mind, we know that everyone's skin and the results you are after are so unique.
