Bee-utiful

Honey; the lustrous golden liquid that has been used for centuries for not only eating, but for the incredible benefits that it has on skin and hair.

Honey dates back thousands of years, used by the Egyptians to bake, make paints, and some even paid their taxes with honey! Farming honey was also a very labor-intensive and dangerous task in the ancient era.

Luckily today, we have much easier and wider access to this natural antibacterial and antioxidant-rich syrup, and that means that Lush is able to source only the best of the best from sustainable and regenerative supply chains.

Here at Lush Australia we use honey supplied by Beechworth Honey. Beechworth is a family-run business located in central Victoria that has been operating for five generations! They understand that honey-bees are vital to the agriculture and plant-life of Australia.

Did you know that bees alone directly effect two-thirds of Australia's agriculture? Bees visit flowers and gather nectar, which they store for energy and then turn into honey. They also store a small amount of pollen on their tiny hair legs, which gives them protein and other nutritional goodness to keep them, and their hives, nice and strong. When the bee visits different flowers, they leave some of this pollen behind accidentally, which in turn helps other flowers and plants to grow and pollinate!

Steven Goldsworthy runs the family business with his wife Jodie. The pair's passion for the Australian honey industry and biosecurity is nothing less than inspiring! Steven confirmed that Beechworth do not import their honey, or any ingredients, from anywhere overseas, to ensure that Beechworth is doing their part in maintaining Australia's rich flora and our biodiversity. Steven and the team also live by the philosophy - "only do unto others as you would have them do unto you", so we can rest easy knowing that Beechworth bees are well looked after.

Not only is Beechworth extremely conscious about our hairy-legged friends' impact on our environment, but they're also educating the public with open-days, training and even handy information about how to keep our honey-bees as happy as can bee.

Unfortunately honey-bees are faced with a few different threats and in turn that means that our environment is in jeopardy. With climate-change becoming a more and more pressing issue, and the rising use of pesticides and chemicals being implemented in everyday houses, bees are unable to pollinate and travel as freely as they would like to. The good news is that there are a bunch of things that we can do to help out the bees. Small things like planting flowers that are more natural to your local environment, sticking to plants with single-petals so that bees can find the nectar easily, and choosing plants that are long-flowering, like lavender and native plants.
